How to style a decorative tray in every room

How to style a decorative tray: a simple formula for heights and textures, the right shape and size, ideas for every room and the mistakes to avoid.

Linea rectangular tray in Dark Green in a living room, 3D printed design object made in Italy – duedecimi

In short: to style a decorative tray, group three to five objects of different heights, mix at least two textures, add one natural touch such as dried flowers or a small plant, and leave part of the tray empty. Match the shape to the furniture: a round tray on a round or square coffee table, an oval or rectangular one on a sideboard, a desk or a washbasin. Then let the tray do its real job: turning loose clutter into one tidy group you can lift in one go.

A decorative tray is one of the simplest styling tools there is. It frames a few objects so they read as a single composition, it gives the eye a clear edge, and it makes cleaning quicker, because you lift one thing instead of six. Here is a basic formula, how to choose the shape and size, ideas for every room and the mistakes to avoid. Sizes and prices come from our product pages.

How to style a decorative tray: the basic formula

  • Three heights: one tall piece (a slim vase with a branch), one medium (a short stack of books, a perfume bottle, an LED candle) and one low (a small dish or a coaster holder).
  • Odd numbers: three or five objects look more relaxed than two or four.
  • Two or three textures: matte surfaces next to glass, wood, linen or stone.
  • One natural touch: dried flowers, a branch or a small plant in its own pot.
  • Some empty space: leave a little of the base visible. A tray filled to the rim looks like storage, not styling.

Start with the tallest object at the back or to one side, then work down in height towards the front. Turn objects slightly towards each other rather than lining them up in a row.

Choosing a decorative tray: shape and size

A useful rule of thumb on a coffee table: the tray should cover roughly a third to half of the top. Smaller looks lost; larger leaves no room for a mug or a book. On a bedside table or a washbasin, measure the free surface first and leave a few centimetres around the tray.

The Orbita round tray (€16.90, Ø 23.5 cm · h 0.9 cm) is the most minimal. The Ellisse oval tray (€16.90, 24 × 13.5 cm · h 1.6 cm) is slim enough for a bedside table. The Linea rectangular tray (€16.90, 22 × 15.7 cm · h 1.8 cm) suits straight lines and desks. The Colonnato fluted vanity tray (€24.90, 23 × 16.1 cm · h 3.6 cm) has a rim of vertical columns that holds bottles in place. All four are in the Decorative trays category.

Decorative tray ideas, room by room

Coffee table

A round tray with two stacked books, a small vase of dried flowers and a coaster holder is a combination that always works. The Sigillo coaster holder (€14.90, Ø 12.2 cm · h 3 cm) holds six coasters up to Ø 11.4 cm and gives the arrangement its low point. Remote controls can go on the tray too: they stop wandering into the sofa.

Sideboard and dining table

On a sideboard, the tray groups a vase, an LED candle and a small sculpture so they read as one display. On the dining table, a round tray becomes the base for a centrepiece that you can lift off when the plates arrive. In December, use it for pine cones and baubles: see our Christmas centrepiece ideas.

Bathroom

On the washbasin, a tray stops bottles from cluttering the edge and makes wiping down quicker. The Terra oval bathroom tray (€14.90, 19.2 × 10.8 cm · h 1.6 cm) gathers the toothbrush cup, the cotton pad holder and a couple of bottles. To build a complete set, read matching bathroom accessories.

Bedroom

An oval tray on the bedside table holds a watch, a ring dish and a slim vase without taking up the whole surface. On a dresser, the Colonnato tray is made for perfumes: its rim of columns frames the bottles like a small stage.

Entryway

A flat rectangular tray takes keys and the post at the same time. If keys tend to slide off, put a small dish on top of it: we compare both options in our guide to choosing a key bowl for the entryway.

Desk

A tray under the pen holder, the phone and a few sticky notes turns a messy corner of the desk into one neat block. The Meandro pen holder (€24.90, 10.7 × 9.5 cm · h 11 cm) fits on the Linea tray with room to spare.

Plants

A plant on a tray looks deliberate, but water must never reach the tray. Keep the plant in its plastic nursery pot on a waterproof saucer, and take it out to water it. For a raised version, the Piano plant riser (€34.90, Ø 23 cm · h 9.2 cm) works like a tray on a conical foot.

Colour: tone-on-tone or contrast

Our decorative trays come in Charcoal, Dark Chocolate, Dark Green, Desert Tan, Latte Brown and Nardo Gray. A tray close to the colour of the furniture looks calm and lets the objects stand out. A contrasting tray, such as Charcoal on light oak or travertine, frames them like a picture. If the objects on it are already colourful, choose a neutral tray; if they are mostly white, glass or stone, a darker tray gives them an outline.

Common decorative tray mistakes

  • Overfilling: if no base is visible, the tray stops working as a frame.
  • Everything at one height: without a tall piece, the arrangement looks flat.
  • Food on the tray: our trays are decorative, not for food. No fruit, bread or sweets directly on them.
  • Water: our vases are not watertight. For fresh flowers, put a glass tube or a glass inside, as explained in fresh flowers in a 3D printed vase; dried flowers need no water at all (see dried flowers at home).
  • Heat and flames: keep trays away from radiators, the hob and strong sun behind a window, because matte PLA deforms above 50 °C (see the Bambu Lab PLA Matte technical data sheet). Use LED candles only.
  • Outdoors: our trays are for indoor use only.

Each tray is 3D printed in Naples after you order and usually handed to the courier within 3–5 working days, plus the courier’s delivery time. We ship to Italy, the EU and Switzerland.

Frequently asked questions

What do you put on a decorative tray?

Three to five objects of different heights: a slim vase with dried flowers, a small stack of books, an LED candle, a coaster holder or a small dish. Add one natural touch and leave some of the tray empty.

What size decorative tray for a coffee table?

As a rule of thumb, a tray that covers about a third to half of the top. On a small or round coffee table, a round tray of around 23–24 cm usually looks balanced.

Round or rectangular tray: which is better?

Follow the furniture. A round tray softens a square or round coffee table; an oval or rectangular one suits long surfaces such as sideboards, desks and washbasins.

Can I serve food on a decorative tray?

Not on ours: they are decorative, not for food. Fruit, bread and sweets belong on a plate or a proper serving dish.

Can I put a plant on a decorative tray?

Yes, as long as the plant stays in its plastic nursery pot on a waterproof saucer and no water reaches the tray. Take the plant out to water it.
